Job Summary
This position is the Paralegal for – and a critical member of – the Labor, Employment & Benefits legal team at PSEG, providing key support for matters of significance to the enterprise relating to the employer/employee relationship.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
• Coordinate all aspects of discovery relating to litigation, arbitrations and agency charges involving current and former employees, taking the lead on gathering necessary information and documents;
• Oversee e-discovery for employment law matters, including making recommendations for custodian data collection and search criteria, reviewing results and tagging for relevancy;
• Coordinate, track and project manage tasks relating to Company-sponsored immigration matters;
• Draft legal hold notices;
• Index and summarize documents and information;
• Assist with witness interviews and preparation for depositions;
• Appropriately handle all subpoenas received by the Company relating to employment and/or benefit records;
• Attend Employee Benefits Committee and Employee Benefits Sub-Committee meetings to take notes and prepare minutes;
• Draft response letters to benefits claimants based on the Committees’ adjudication of appeals;
• Maintain detailed appeal tracking chart for Corporate Benefits;
• Respond to external and internal audit requests;
• Project manage immigration matters, coordinating between outside counsel and internal stakeholders and ensuring all deadlines are met and required files maintained;
• Organize and maintain records, files and information related to practice group matters, preparing and updating reports as needed; and
• Perform any other duties as assigned.
Job Specific Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Competencies:
• 3+ years of paralegal experience at a law firm or in house legal department;
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Ability to work under pressure, handling and appropriately prioritizing multiple tasks;
• Strong planning and organizational skills;
• Ability to interact professionally with internal clients, attorneys, retained counsel, other paralegals, and administrative assistants
• Understanding of proper management, handling and storage of confidential files and documents;
• Ability to perform legal research using Internet based research tools including Westlaw;
• Ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day oversight;
• Team player able to work collaboratively across practice and department lines;
• Must foster an inclusive work environment and respect all aspects of diversity; and
• Must demonstrate and value differences in others’ strengths, perspectives, approaches, and personal choices.
Desired Qualifications and Competencies:
• College degree or some college level courses;
• Paralegal Certificate;
• Significant experience handling employment law matters at a law firm or in house legal department;
• Experience responding to subpoenas;
• Experience investigating and drafting responses to charges filed with the EEOC and similar state/local agencies; and
• Familiarity with employee benefit plans and benefit claims.
